Limb Deformities and Limb Length Discrepancies

Also known as: LLD, congenital limb anomalies, congenital limb abnormalities

What are limb deformities and limb length discrepancies?

Limb deformities can refer to any abnormalities related to the growth and development of the arms or legs. A limb length discrepancy is more specific and refers to arms or legs that are different lengths from one another.

What causes limb deformities and limb length discrepancies?
Limb deformities and limb length discrepancies have a multitude of causes.  These can be the result of a congenital difference, associated with an underlying syndrome, or can develop over time as a result of trauma, infection, or reasons that are not clearly understood.

What are the symptoms of limb deformities and limb length discrepancies?

Depending on the nature and severity of the deformity or discrepancy, symptoms can range from minimal impairment to severe problems with limb function such as difficulties using the hands or inability to walk well.

What are limb deformities and limb length discrepancies care options?

If there is a mild limb length discrepancy, treatment may not even be required.
Orthotic devices, braces and other assistive items can be used to either correct limb deformities and limb length discrepancies or help the individual function better with the condition. Physical and occupational therapy can also be of benefit in certain cases.

When function is impaired or there is a large discrepancy, corrective  surgery is an option.
