Neural-Enabled Prosthetic Hand restores sensation to first human subject

The NEPH system, developed at Florida International University by Ranu Jung and her Adaptive Neural Systems Laboratory team, restores a sense of touch/grasp force and hand opening by stimulating sensory nerve fibers in the residual limb with fine wires implanted inside nerves. Implantation of the device was performed by Dr. Aaron Berger and his team from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

Prevent drowning and accidents when children are near water by assigning a responsible adult to wear a Water Watcher Badge. The badge wearer takes responsibility to supervise the children until hading off to the next water watcher. Available at selected urgent care centers while supplies last.

Performance & Injury Prevention Group Sports Classes

Our performance training programs are designed for the young athlete to improve strength, range of motion, balance, agility and reduce the risk of sports related injuries. Group training programs will have 4 to 10 participants and will be offered once or twice a week over a period of 6 weeks. Register now, space is limited!

Support Groups and Workshops

Our therapy groups for children and teens from ages 7 to 18, are led by board certified pediatric psychologists and meet weekly. The groups teach children coping skills for anxiety and stress, sleep disorders, social skills, ADHD management, among others.

Over the summer, I was diagnosed with shingles.  Whenever someone has found out that I had shingles, they have been surprised. “I thought only the elderly got that,” is usually the response. It turns out, you can develop shingles at any age, but you’ll only get it if you have had chicken pox (varicella).

My child is the one having the surgery, and while I am allowed to be anxious and nervous, I really should be following his lead. If I act and look scared around him, he’ll pick up on that energy and feel like he’s supposed to be scared.  If I treat him like he’s “sick” all the time, he’s going to act “sick” all the time.
