Neural-Enabled Prosthetic Hand (NEPH) System Developed at FIU restores sensation to first human subject

The NEPH system, developed at Florida International University by Ranu Jung and her Adaptive Neural Systems Laboratory team, restores a sense of touch/grasp force and hand opening by stimulating sensory nerve fibers in the residual limb with fine wires implanted inside nerves. Implantation of the device was performed by Dr. Aaron Berger and his team from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Berger is a hand and peripheral nerve surgeon who holds an appointment in FIU’s Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Nicklaus Children’s Appoints Frank Garcia Vice President of Operations

Frank Garcia has been appointed Vice President of Operations for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, responsible for overseeing the Emergency Department, LifeFlight Critical Care Transport Program, as well as the radiology, laboratory and pharmacy services for the 289-bed pediatric specialty hospital. In this role Mr. Garcia oversees nearly 500 staff members within the health system.

Nicklaus Children’s Opens Pediatric Urgent Care Facility in City of Homestead

Nicklaus Children’s Health System announces the opening of its newest urgent care location, the Nicklaus Children’s Homestead Outpatient Center. The center is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Located at 2072 NE 8 Street at the Campbell Shoppes in Homestead, the facility offers walk-in pediatric urgent care, for infants older than 2 months, children, teens and young adults through age 21.

Fetal Care Center Special Delivery Unit Expected to Open in Summer of 2019
We are pleased to announce the Fetal Care Center’s special delivery unit is expected to open in the summer of 2019. This special delivery unit will offer a smooth transfer of care and access to our network of pediatric subspecialists and our three pediatric intensive care units.
445 students receive free EKG screenings
The Heart Program at Nicklaus Children’s, in conjunction with the Breanna Vergara Foundation, hosted an EKG screening at St. Brendan Catholic Elementary School as part of the ongoing effort to detect congenital conditions that can lead to sudden cardiac death in children.
