“In January 13, 2005 our son Alexander was born. We were full of joy and our whole family was there for this wonderful day. Then we were told that our son needed to be transferred to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, emergency cardiology department.
Our son was born with a congenital heart problem that would require open heart surgery as soon as possible. Within hours of my baby's birth I was off to a hospital that I had never been, to try and save my son's life. To say that I was nervous is a great understatement.
The staff at the Nicklaus Children's Hospital cardiology department were there to greet me and assure me that everything would be OK. I was alone and scared and with my wife back at the hospital with the family, I had no one to talk to. With the grace of God and the help of the staff, I started to see that transposition of the great arteries was common and routine to the staff.
The doctors and nurses at Nicklaus Children's Hospital made our days at the hospital much more of a relaxing and bearable experience than we could have asked for. Thanks to Dr. Burke and his whole staff our child is a normal boy with all the energy in the world, and you couldn’t tell from the outside this kid was an open heart patient if you did not see the scar. God gave this doctor a great gift and he uses it to the best of his ability. God bless him. “
