Para Katy, la vida cambió en un instante. Mientras disfrutaba de un día en el agua, estuvo involucrada en un devastador accidente de bote que la dejó con una lesión cerebral traumática.  

Katy fue trasladada en avión al Centro de Trauma Pediátrico Miguel "Mike" B. Fernandez Family de Nicklaus Children's Hospital, donde recibió atención inmediata que le salvó la vida. Un equipo de expertos del Instituto de Neurociencia de Nicklaus Children's realizó cirugía cerebral de emergencia para estabilizar su condición. Durante días, Katy permaneció en coma, su familia se aferraba a la esperanza y dependía del apoyo del equipo de atención. Contra todo pronóstico, Katy comenzó a despertarse, mostrando pequeños pero poderosos signos de recuperación. 

Un largo viaje de sanación comenzó con el apoyo de su familia y la atención continua en Nicklaus Children's. Hoy, Katy continúa esforzándose para recuperar su fuerza. A través de terapias enfocadas en el habla, la movilidad y la función general, está logrando progreso significativo todos los días.
