For Katy, life changed in an instant. While enjoying a day on the water, she was involved in a devastating boating accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury. Within moments, her family’s world was turned upside down.
Katy was airlifted to the Miguel “Mike” B. Fernandez Family Pediatric Trauma Center at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where she received immediate, life-saving care. The expert team at Nicklaus Children’s Neuroscience Institute performed emergency brain surgery to stabilize her condition. For days, Katy remained in a coma, her family clinging to hope and depending on the support of the care team. Against the odds, Katy began to awaken, showing small but powerful signs of recovery.
A long journey of healing began with the support of her family and ongoing care at Nicklaus Children’s. Today, Katy continues to work hard to regain her strength. Through therapies focused on speech, mobility, and overall function, she is making meaningful progress every day.
