At just eight days old, Thomas began struggling to breathe. His family rushed him to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where doctors discovered a severe narrowing in his aorta that required open-heart surgery. His journey would eventually lead to a diagnosis of Williams syndrome and multiple heart surgeries. 

Through the expertise of the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Heart Institute, Thomas is now thriving. His journey is a powerful reminder of what exceptional pediatric care and generous supporters like you can make possible. 

As his mom shares, “I truly believe that Thomas is alive and thriving because of this exceptional hospital, and I’m forever grateful.”

August 25, 2026 – The cardiovascular surgery team at the Nicklaus Children's Hospital Heart Institute successfully performed the first partial heart transplant in the state of Florida in March of 2026 on Greyson, an 11-year-old patient born with a Ventricular Septal Defect, a congenital heart disorder. In this major surgical innovation, the living valve of a donor's heart is implanted into a patient, which allows the living valve to grow with the child.

New Florida Heart Law Highlights the Importance of EKG Screenings for Student-Athletes

July 09, 2026 – Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, Florida’s Second Chance Act will require many high school student-athletes to complete a one-time electrocardiogram, or EKG, before participating in sports governed by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA). The new requirement is intended to help detect hidden heart conditions that may increase a young athlete’s risk for sudden cardiac arrest.
