The best Mother’s Day gift a mother can receive is the assurance that her children are safe, healthy and happy. Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) and United Automobile Insurance Group (UAIG) are hosting a child safety seat check on Saturday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Miami Children’s Hospital employee parking lot, 3100 SW 62nd Ave., Miami. The event is open to the community to show parents how to install a child safety seat properly to reduce the risk of injuries. No appointment necessary. UAIG has donated $1,500 for this event.
“This year alone there has been a 4 percent increase of injuries and death due to children that are unrestrained in vehicles,” said Sandra Iglesias, Vice President of United Automobile Insurance Group. “United Automobile Insurance Group will continue to do whatever we can to keep children safe and healthy.”
According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, car crashes are the leading cause of death for children 0-14 years of age. Taking a few extra minutes to ensure that your child’s safety seat is installed correctly can keep your child safe. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, child safety seats reduce injury by 71 percent for infants less than 1 year of age, and by 54 percent for toddlers between 1 and 4 years of age. Children ages 4 to 8 are most at risk because most don’t use booster seats.
“All parents need to take the necessary measures to protect their children,” said Brian Hannigan, RN and MCH Community Educator. “This program will provide parents with the proper knowledge of how to keep their kids safe while riding in a vehicle.”
