Pediatric Interventional Radiologist

Dr. Restrepo is employed by Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists, the physician-led multispecialty group practice of Nicklaus Children’s Health System. He is a pediatric interventional radiologist within the Department of Radiology at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and also serves as a professor of radiology at Florida International University. Dr. Restrepo earned his medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Faculty of Medicine in Bogotá, Colombia. He then completed a residency in radiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, where he served as chief resident. Dr. Restrepo then pursued fellowships in pediatric radiology and pediatric interventional radiology at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.

Dr. Restrepo was trained not only in the interpretation of all imaging modalities pertinent to children, but also learned techniques to perform minimally invasive image guided procedures. He spearheaded the minimally invasive interventional radiology service at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and has pioneered many new techniques and procedures in the field. One of his areas of clinical interest is all types of vascular anomalies (birthmarks), such as hemangiomas and vascular malformations.

Dr. Restrepo is certified by the American Board of Radiology with certification of added qualifications in pediatric radiology. He is a member of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR), International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) and International Skeletal Society (ISS).

Dr. Restrepo is an avid writer, editor and eloquent speaker. He is one of the editors of the text book, “Pediatric Radiology: Practical Imaging Evaluation of Infants and Children.” In addition, he has published more than 40 articles in leading radiology journals, written more than 10 textbook chapters and presented numerous scientific posters at national and international meetings. Dr. Restrepo has received the prestigious Caffey Award four times at the Society for Pediatric Radiology’s annual meeting, along with the Magna Cum Laude award once and the Cum Laude award twice from the Radiological Society of North America. Every year, he is an invited speaker at national and international conferences, as well as radiological meetings. Dr. Restrepo also serves as an editor for radiology journals and is an examiner with the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Restrepo sees patients at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. He is bilingual in English and Spanish.

The Department of Radiology at Nicklaus Children's Hospital features state-of-the-art equipment. The radiology practice has been serving the community since the hospital's inception in 1950. Under the leadership of Dr. Nolan R. Altman, department chief, the group is the largest in South Florida devoted exclusively to the practice of pediatric radiology. It includes board-certified experts in pediatric radiology, nuclear medicine, neuroradiology and cardiac CT imaging, with special interests in pediatric interventional and musculoskeletal disorders. The group is the only one in South Florida that offers a pediatric radiology fellowship, and also trains radiology residents.
