The Colorectal Center Care team includes a full spectrum of specialists who are available to consult in the child’s care during clinics, depending on individual needs, ensuring that all aspects of the child’s care are addressed and eliminating the need for multiple separate appointments and consults. Dr. Juan Calisto is a pediatric surgeon within the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Dr. Calisto completed medical school in Lima, Peru, followed by a general surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma. He then completed Fellowships in Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Surgical Critical Care at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Calisto's publications and clinical interests include the surgical treatment of pediatric colorectal diseases, surgical oncology and thoracic surgery. He developed since 2014 a program to train surgeons from developing countries along with pediatric colorectal surgeon- Luis De La Torre M.D,. In addition, he is teaching faculty of minimally invasive thoracic and abdominal surgery for the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group. Dr. Calisto sees patients at the Nicklaus Children's Hospital main campus. He is fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
Raquel Pasarón serves as nurse practitioner for the Colorectal Center. She has extensive experience in supporting the care needs of children with colorectal anomalies.
Raquel received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Barry University, a master's in nursing from the University of Miami and her doctorate in nursing from the University of Florida. During her tenure at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, she has served as a nurse practitioner for the Department of Pediatric Surgery and as nonphysician faculty for the hospital's pediatric surgery fellowship program.
Raquel is the only nurse who serves as a voluntary clinical instructor for the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Florida International University, Department of Pediatric Surgery. She is a past president of the American Pediatric Surgical Nursing Association, Inc. (APSNA), and recipient of the organization's Founders Award, honoring significant contributions to the advancement of the care of pediatric surgical patients and exemplary service to the APSNA organization. She has presented extensively at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.
