Diagnostic and Therapeutic Surgery for Pediatric Airway Disorders

Also known as: pediatric airway surgery.

What is diagnostic and therapeutic surgery for pediatric airway disorders?

Children can be born with or develop a variety of different medical conditions that affect the windpipe (trachea), the larynx or other components of the airway. Diagnostic and therapeutic surgery for pediatric airway disorders are procedures that both diagnose the problem and repair it.

What happens during the procedure?

The specific procedures will vary based on the nature of the problem and the surgery that is recommended. They often involve using diagnostic tools such as bronchoscopes or endoscopes when possible. The procedures may involve removing damaged portions of the airway or using implants to enlarge constricted portions of the airway.

Is any special preparation needed?

Preparation will vary based on the procedure. Typically, children will need to avoid food, drink or certain medications for a period of time prior to the procedure.

What are the risk factors?

Infection, bleeding and injury to surrounding organs and tissues are all possible complications of diagnostic and therapeutic surgery for pediatric airway disorders.
