What is eye burning, itching and discharge?

If your eyes are burning and accompanied with itchiness and a substance other than tears, it could be due to a number of different issues ranging from mild to severe.
 

What might cause eye burning, itching and discharge?

Potential causes of eye burning, itching and discharge include the following:
  • Infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Allergies
  • Dry eyes
  • Chemical irritants
  • Cigarette smoke or smog exposure
  • Eye injuries

How can it be treated?

You can relieve eye irritation with cool compresses or eye drops. Applying a warm washcloth can help remove any crust that develops. Of course, avoiding the potential triggers such as allergies or polluted air can also help prevent or relieve eye burning, itching and discharge.
 

When should you seek medical attention?

If eye burning, itching and discharge is accompanied by severe pain, vision loss, eye swelling or strangely colored discharge, see your doctor.
