What causes congenital neck masses?

Congenital means the neck masses are present at birth. They have a variety of causes. In some cases, parts of the body do not develop normally and lead to the masses. They can also occur as a side effect of other diseases, such as cancer, bacterial infections, viral infections or other causes.

Some congenital neck masses cause no symptoms whatsoever. Other can become quite painful or even restrict the movement of the head and neck.

Minor masses that aren’t causing any symptoms may not require treatment. If the mass is larger, causing symptoms or become infected, surgical removal of the mass is the likely form of treatment.
