The Department of Neurology & Neurosurgery at Nicklaus Children's Hospital is the first in the region to offer a minimally invasive laser procedure called Visualase for children with seizures. Additionally, in 2012, Nicklaus Children's Hospital announced its first nerve repair surgery with Avance® Nerve Graft by AxoGen, Inc.

LifeFlight® Critical Care Transport Program

Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, LifeFlight® critical care transport team provides transport of critically ill children from referring hospitals to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, pediatric care units. In addition to ground ambulance transports, the LifeFlight® program offers air transport via helicopters operated by PHI, Inc., one of the world’s most experienced aircraft operators and the holder of a Part 135 Certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration, and through contracted fixed-wing aircraft charters.*
Nicklaus Children's Hospital Cancer Center
The Nicklaus Children's Hospital Cancer Center performed the region’s first hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) or “heated chemotherapy” surgical treatment on a pediatric cancer patient in 2012.
In addition, Nicklaus Children's Hospital's Cancer Center has participated in a Phase II study of the IMC-A 12 AIGF-I receptor. This antibody is made in a lab and targets a receptor common in pediatric tumors, binding to the receptor and blocking synthesis of a protein needed for tumor growth. Without the protein the tumor cells begin to die.
