A plasma methylmalonic acid test is a test to determine the levels of methylmalonic acid in the blood plasma. It is a helpful test in the diagnosis of a vitamin B12 deficiency, and also for a disorder known as methymalonic acidemia.
A routine blood draw is required in order to begin the plasma methylmalonic acid - plasma test. The blood sample is then taken to a laboratory for testing and analysis.
There is no special preparation needed.
Infection, bleeding and damage to surrounding organs and tissues are potential risks of any blood draw.

Ensuring that the levels are optimal is important since deficiency or insufficiency of vitamin B12 may be associated with hematologic conditions such as megaloblastic anemia and pernicious anemia and neurologic conditions such as hypotonia, developmental delay and failure to thrive.
