The Rett Syndrome Clinic, part of the Nicklaus Children's Neuroscience Institute, is multidisciplinary service dedicated to the care and support of children born with Rett syndrome. Rett syndrome is a genetic condition that impacts brain development and often times, children with Rett syndrome can have increasing problems with the muscles that control speech, body movements and the eyes. This genetic condition is primarily seen in infant girls. In most instances, this occurs randomly and is not passed down from parents to children.

Symptoms of Rett syndrome most often appear between the ages of 6 and 18 months. They include the following, among other complications:

  • Growth delays
  • Unusual hand and eye movements
  • Trouble breathing
  • Declines in movement and coordination
  • Difficulty with communication

About the Rett Syndrome Clinic

Nicklaus Children’s Rett Syndrome Clinic has been recognized as a Center of Excellence by the International Rett Syndrome Foundation, making it one of 21 centers of excellence in the nation and the only treatment center in Florida for children with these complex care needs. The Rett Syndrome Clinic brings together an experienced team of specialists to consult collaboratively in the diagnosis, treatment and support of children with Rett syndrome. This clinic is available for patients and their families on the last Tuesday of each month. 

A Multidisciplinary Team Approach to Care

With so many body systems potentially affected by Rett syndrome, affected families benefit from a collective approach to care. This involves bringing together a comprehensive team of specialists in a single clinic visit to consult collaboratively about the child’s care and health management. The team evaluates each child and works together to develop an optimal care plan. This plan is specifically tailored to address each child’s individual needs.

While there is no cure for Rett syndrome, several treatments are available to support the care of children and families with diverse needs. Those include:
