Santiago was only in kindergarten when he was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a cancerous tumor of the brain.
His mother, Mehble, says their life was turned upside down when he suddenly came down with strong flu-like symptoms, high fevers, vomiting and nausea that would not go away. After 24 hours of hospitalization, they learned it was a brain tumor and needed emergency surgery to remove the mass in his brain. Not only was this terrifying for Santiago and his family, but they also worried about the long journey of chemotherapy, radiation and rehabilitation.
Thankfully, Santiago responded well to his treatment and his cancer free. He got to ring the celebratory “end of treatment bell” in April of 2023 at Nicklaus Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorder Institute.
Santiago and his family are now enjoying the lazy days of summer with outdoor activities and are looking forward to his starting the first grade in the fall.
