Baseline Balance Assesment & Vestibular Testing
The Balance and Vestibular test is an additional component to a baseline concussion prevention protocol for all age ranges, which can include the ImPACT computerized concussion baseline test (for athletes 12 and up), or as a primary baseline concussion test for athletes 11 years and younger.
Baseline Balance and Vestibular tests are administered by our trained Sports Health concussion specialists. Results are stored in our database for post-concussion comparison, and each athlete is provided with a testing results summary. Baseline Balance and Vestibular testing is available for individual athletes and teams.
What is a baseline concussion test?
Baseline concussion testing is a tool to help determine an athlete’s normal balance and cognitive function. Baseline testing provides:
- Pre and post-injury data
- Care plan for return to school with accommodations
- Guidance and supervision of return to physical activity
- Rehab therapy for physical, visual/ocular, vestibular and cognitive sequelae
- Clearance for return to contact sports
- Long-term management of post-concussion syndrome
How long is the test?
The Baseline Balance and Vestibular test is conducted using the NeuroCom force plate balance system, and takes about 30 minutes to complete. The test includes the following 3 research based components:
- A modified CTSIB (Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance) test
- A BESS (Balance Error Scoring System) test
- And a weight bearing symmetry test
Who should get tested?
It is recommended for athletes to perform baseline testing before participating in impact sports. Scores of the baseline test are compared to post-concussive event testing to help measure recovery of concussion symptoms and determine return sport readiness.
Baseline Balance and Vestibular testing is available for individual athletes and teams (S30 per athlete).
