Hand Hygiene at Nicklaus Children's Hospital

Did you know that 80% of infectious diseases are spread by our hands?
Whether you're a patient, a parent, or a visitor, clean hands save lives!
For our young patients, especially those with weaker immune systems, germs can be dangerous.
That’s why we follow P.A.W.S. – Please Always Wash and Sanitize!

When Should You Wash Your Hands
Wash your hands at these key moments: Before entering and after leaving your child’s room.”
Before changing your child’s bandages or similar activities
After exposure to body fluids, your or someone else’s, and using the bathroom
Before and after touching a child or their surroundings.

How to Wash with Soap & Water.
Use soap and water when your hands are visibly dirty, after using the restroom, or before eating. Here’s how.
Next, use soap, scrub your hands on the inside of your palms, the top of your hands, between your fingers, under your fingernails, and don’t forget about your wrists!
Make sure to scrub for 20 seconds. Not sure how long that is? Sing the happy Birthday song twice while you do it!
Rinse soap completely from your hands with warm or cold water. Once you are finished, dry your hands with a clan towel, paper towel or an air dryer.
Make sure to turn off the faucet using a paper towel.

When to Use Hand Sanitizer
Hand sanitizer is a great option when soap and water aren’t available.
Pump sanitizer into your palm – one pump is enough!
Rub all over your hands and fingers, including under your nails.
Keep rubbing for 20 seconds until dry, no wiping!
By keeping our hands clean, we protect our children, families, and staff. Thank you for doing your part at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital!
