Three Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) pediatric specialty services are among the best in the nation, according to U.S.News & World Report’s “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” issue, dated June 9. MCH was the only children’s hospital in Florida to be listed in more than one subspecialty category.
- MCH’s heart and heart surgery program was listed 13th in the nation.
- MCH’s neonatology program was ranked 17th in the nation.
- MCH’s neurology and neurosurgery program was ranked 22nd.
“All of us at Miami Children’s are exceedingly proud of these fine subspecialty programs,” said Dr. Narendra Kini, President and CEO of Miami Children’s Hospital. “This much-deserved national recognition is a tribute the leadership and dedication of the physicians, nurses and staff who have committed their lives to enhancing the health and well being of children.”
The specialty rankings of this year's "America's Best Children's Hospitals" were based on a new and improved methodology that weighed a three-part blend of reputation, outcome, and care-related measures such as nursing care, advanced technology, credentialing, and other factors. A detailed description of the methodology can be found online at www.usnews.com/pediatrics.
Facilities eligible for the U.S. News ranking were largely drawn from members of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) in either of two categories -- a freestanding children’s hospital or a children’s “hospital within a hospital” (a large, multidisciplinary pediatric service within a medical center). In addition, several non-NACHRI members were added because of known expertise or at the recommendation of experts.
Of the 143 children’s hospitals invited to complete a survey asking for information as detailed as whether a center offers postgraduate fellowships in pediatric cardiology, 113 responded. The survey was constructed by RTI International, which collects the data and oversees the methodology behind the general (adult) acute care Best Hospitals rankings.
Founded in 1950, Miami Children's Hospital is the only licensed specialty hospital for children in South Florida. Miami Children’s Hospital offers medical care and services for children from birth to age 21 and has been designated an American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet facility, the nursing profession’s most prestigious institutional honor. The 289-bed medical facility has expertise in all aspects of pediatric medicine.
