When John and Jess learned that their soon-to-be firstborn son JP was diagnosed in utero with a bladder obstruction that required a surgery before birth, their world came to a stop. Due to his diagnosis as well as a few other iatrogenic items, JP needed to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after birth. He spent the first 6 months of his life at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, receiving the care he needed to give him a fighting chance.
Two years later, JP continues to undergo treatment at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, including nightly peritoneal dialysis for eight hours at home under the care of his parents. The end goal is to get JP to a healthy weight and size in order to undergo a kidney transplant to improve the quality of his life.
Throughout our journey with JP, we have met many nurses and doctors who put their personal life aside to attend not just to our son, but all the patients in the dialysis unit. Their attentive nature meant our son was receiving the best care every day,” said John.
