Bicycle, Scooter and Skateboard Safety Tips

Childhood and Adolescence are wonderful times in the life of a child. Outdoor fun constitutes an integral part of growing up and remaining active in sports. At Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital,
we want to ensure fun times plus physical activity always go together with safety!

Bicycle Safety Tips:

  • Everyone should wear a bicycle helmet while riding a bicycle.
  • Helmets protect your head from hitting the road and/or other vehicles in the event of an accident
  • Helmets should fit comfortably and securely (should not tilt over the forehead or the back of the head).
  • Check tires for correct air pressure, cuts, bulges and bubbles. Parents, if attaching baby bicycle cart to bike use a flag to make the cart visible to drivers and make sure child is appropriately restrained. Always ride during daylight
  • Keep chains oiled so they don’t lock up or break while riding. Never wear headphones while riding, they will reduce the ability to hear traffic.
  • Check for traffic and stay alert at all times watching for other vehicles, pedestrians, potholes, railroad tracks and drains.
  • Do not ride in parking lots or between cars.
  • Wear bright colored clothing and avoid riding at night.
  • Always ride single file in the same direction as other traffic.
  • Use caution when crossing the street and only cross at traffic lights, stop signs and designated crosswalks. You should also get off your bicycle and walk across.
  • Never let anyone ride on the handlebars or rear pegs of the bicycle.

Scooter Safety Tips:

  • Check scooter carefully for damage before riding.
  •  Always ride during the daytime and wear bright colored clothes.
Always ride on sidewalks or paved off-road paths away from any traffic. Observe pedestrian courtesy rules.
  • Avoid streets, large puddles of water, sand, gravel or dirt.
Always wear safety gear and make sure that they fit properly: helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and shoes with toe protection. NEVER RIDE BARE FOOT.
  • Use caution when riding downhill. It is always better to get off and walk the scooter than try to ride it downhill.
  • Only one person should be on the scooter at a time.
  • Veirfy Scooter hasn't been recalled. (Razor Scooter recall)

Skateboard Safety Tips:

Skateboarding can be a lot of fun when using a safe skateboard and the appropriate protective gear. Please observe the following tips for happy skateboarding.

Purchase a skateboard recommended by the Consumers Safety Bureau.

  • Make sure wheels are firmly secured to the skateboard. Do not leave the store before buying protective gear (helmet, elbows, knee pads).
  • Always skateboard in open areas free of sharp curves, heights and moving traffic. Observe pedestrian rules.
  • Never attempt high jumps or riding on curved surfaces unless you are trained and experienced. Make sure you are using your protective gear.
  • Avoid wet surfaces and puddles your wheels will not provide adequate ground friction to help you control the movement of the skateboard.
