What is a wrist/hand overuse injury?

Overuse injuries, also known as repetitive strain injuries, can occur in the wrists and hands from performing activities that require repetitive motion or using improper technique. Pain is usually experienced in muscles, nerves, ligaments and/or tendons.

What causes wrist/hand overuse injury? 

Performing a repetitive motion tasks and/or using improper technique can result in wrist/hand overuse injury. This can be due to work-related motions or athletic endeavors. Muscles, nerve ligaments and tendons can be affected.

What are the symptoms of wrist/hand overuse injury? 

Symptoms can vary based on the injury that is present. Common symptoms include pain, difficulty moving the hand or wrist, swelling, loss of sensation, tingling and numbness and other symptoms.

What are wrist/hand overuse injury care options? 

Anti-inflammatory pain medications, splints and physical or occupational therapy can help with minor wrist/hand overuse injuries. Refraining from the activity that triggers the symptoms is often curative. Ergonomic evaluation is often helpful. Surgery is rarely indicated.
