A thyroglossal duct cyst is a mass that forms in the neck, most often in children. It’s formed from leftover tissues that remain in the body after the thyroid gland forms in the fetus.

What causes thyroglossal duct cyst?

The thyroglossal duct is a body part that is present in fetuses to help with the formation of the thyroid gland, but then they disappear. When tissue from this duct remain, they can form voids in the neck where the cysts form.

What are the symptoms of thyroglossal duct cyst?

Aside from the physical presence of the cyst, the condition can also cause redness, swelling, pain, difficulty swallowing and trouble breathing.

What are thyroglossal duct cyst care options?

Symptoms of a thyroglossal duct cyst can be treated with antibiotics. If they recur frequently, surgery to remove the cyst and the remains of the thyroglossal duct is an option.
