Shin Splints

Also known as: tibial stress syndrome.

What are shin splints?

Shin splints refers to pain that radiates along the shinbone, or tibia, in the lower portion of the leg. It is a common problem related to running and other exercises.

What causes shin splints?

Shin splints can occur due to the repetitive motion related to running or other workout programs. Change in exercise type, duration, intensity or if the person has flat feet or wear improper footwear can increase the chances of developing shin splints.

What are the symptoms of shin splints?

The pain related to shin splints can be either sharp or dull and happen while exercising or afterward. Touching the spot can sometimes make the pain worse.

What are shin splints care options?

Shin splints can typically be treated with rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), as well as stretching, wearing supportive bandages or shoes, and using over-the-counter pain relievers. Surgery is rarely needed for shin splints.

This training program is designed to help maintain shoulder and elbow strength, endurance, and flexibility to withstand the rigors of a lengthy season and optimize sports performance, led by Sports Health Performance Specialists. Off-Season Sports Conditioning Group Class

This program is designed to prepare athletes for their individual sports season to ensure optimize sports performance and prevent injury. Athletes will focus a periodization of 3 weeks strength and endurance phase, followed by a 3 week power phase led by Sports Health Performance Specialists.
