Articular cartilage is the hard, smooth cartilage that covers the ends of bones where they meet up with one another. When this material gets damaged, it’s known as an articular cartilage injury. It frequently impacts the knees.

What causes articular cartilage injury?

Injuries or accident, often from sports, are the primary causes of articular cartilage injuries. It usually requires an impact directly to the knee joint, such as a tackle in football.

What are the symptoms of articular cartilage injury?

Pain, swelling and difficulty moving the joint are the most common symptoms of articular cartilage injury. In more severe instances, fractures around the joint can occur.

What are articular cartilage injury care options?

For minor injuries, rest, ice and over-the-counter pain relievers are the typical treatment. More severe articular cartilage injury may require surgery.
