You know that children’s mental health is important. But how can you make a difference on such a big issue? Your actions and your words matter – and can have an impact. The On Our Sleeves experts have some ideas for you.
1. Stop the stigma around mental health by watching your words.
Saying things like, “He’s nuts!” or “She’s a psycho.” can be hurtful and also suggest that a mental health diagnosis is bad. When someone has been diagnosed with a mental health diagnosis, think of it the same way you would think of someone with cancer or a broken bone. You may slip up because changing your language patterns can take practice. When you realize you’ve said something that you’re trying to stop saying, correct yourself and move on.
2. Find and share evidence-informed mental health resources.
Whether they’re from On Our Sleeves or other reputable organizations (such as hospitals, medical organizations or national groups like the American Psychological Association), find resources you can share with those who may not know much about children’s mental health. You may choose to share information via social media, email, or in person.
3. Look for other opportunities to spread the word about mental health.
Would your workplace be interested in knowing more about how children’s mental health impacts places of business? Maybe your local school district hasn’t considered mental health as part of their curriculum. Share resources with places you may normally not think of.
4. Keep learning about mental health.
New research is coming out all of the time and many organizations host speakers, webinars and in person trainings to provide additional education. Consider attending a training or gathering a group of friends or coworkers to participate in a webinar on mental health. Take time afterward to talk about what you learned and who else you might want to share that information with.
These are just a few of the many ways to advocate for children’s mental health!
