MIAMI, FL — Thanks to a new series to premiere tonight at 9 p.m. on The Learning Channel (TLC), the whole country will watch the process as dozens of children with craniofacial differences become just as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside.
The Facemakers will revolve around the Miami Children’s Hospital Craniofacial Center. The 10-episode docu-reality program will focus on children with craniofacial anomalies, their families and the multidisciplinary team that makes up the Craniofacial Center.
“Children born with craniofacial differences are just like other children on the inside. They like to have fun, play and spend time with their friends,” says Dr. Mislen Bauer, Director of the Division of Genetics and Metabolism and Director of the Craniofacial Center. “This series will show the personal side of these special children to everyone watching, and it will let families know that the wonderful Craniofacial team can make a huge difference in these children’s lives.”
For many years, parents of children born with craniofacial differences didn’t have one special place they could go to for medical treatment. They would travel from specialist to specialist, surgeon to surgeon, very few of whom tried to consolidate their child’s care. However, when the Miami Children’s Craniofacial Center opened just over a decade ago, it changed all that.
By working together in a clinic setting, physicians and therapists are able to evaluate the children and coordinate every step of their patients’ care with that of other Craniofacial Center staff. Members of the craniofacial team include: geneticists, plastic surgeons, speech therapists, otolaryngologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists, psychologists, audiologists and others. Since opening just 10 years ago, the Craniofacial Center has treated more than 1,000 children.
A new episode of The Facemakers will air every Wednesday at 9 p.m. and again at 12 a.m. Please check your local cable listing for channel information.
