Pediatric Urgent Care Facility now open in Homestead

Nicklaus Children’s Health System has opened its newest pediatric urgent care facility, the Nicklaus Children’s Homestead Outpatient Center in the city of Homestead.  The center, located at  2072 NE 8 Street at the Campbell Shoppes, offers walk-in pediatric urgent care services from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily for infants, children, teens and young adults through age 21.

New Device Helps Children with Drug-Resistant Epilepsy Manage Seizures

Grant, an 11 year old boy who contracted encephalitis, is the first pediatric patient in South Florida to utilize the SenTiva VNS device, which is currently the smallest and lightest responsive therapy for epilepsy available on the market. The device, used in combination with epilepsy medications, has been shown to be effective in reducing seizure frequency and duration. 

Personalized Medicine Initiatives Offer Hope to Acutely Ill Children

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, in collaboration with Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine and Sanford Health, has launched two genomic medicine research protocols to more effectively diagnose and treat children with unexplained illnesses.

Nicklaus Children's Horizon Nurse Residency Program Earns ANCC Accreditation

The Horizon Nurse Residency Program has achieved accreditation with distinction from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC). Accreditation with Distinction is the highest recognition bestowed by the ANCC’s Commission on Accreditation and an honor that no other children’s hospital on the east coast of the U.S. currently holds.

Nicklaus Children’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center Receives NAEC Accreditation

The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, part of the Nicklaus Children's Brain Institute, has received accreditation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a level 4 epilepsy center. Level 4 epilepsy centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.

Our performance training programs are designed for the young athlete to improve strength, range of motion, balance, agility and reduce the risk of sports related injuries. Support Groups and Workshops

Our therapy groups for children and teens from ages 7 to 18, are led by board certified pediatric psychologists and meet weekly. The groups teach children coping skills for anxiety and stress, sleep disorders, social skills, ADHD management, among others.

If I act and look scared around him, he’ll pick up on that energy and feel like he’s supposed to be scared.  If I treat him like he’s “sick” all the time, he’s going to act “sick” all the time.

My family and I recently relocated to Birmingham, Al. One of the many things on my to do list was to find a counselor in this new city. In one of our first sessions together, she asked me this seemingly simple question. “What does it mean to you to be a mother?”  I started to answer by listing off things that I do as a mother, tasks that I assume as my son’s mother, but that’s not what she asked me.
