Also known as: pityriasis versicolor.
Tinea versicolor is a yeast infection of the skin that causes red spots to appear. Though it’s not harmful, it can cause unwanted physical symptoms.
Yeast causes the spots related to tinea versicolor. It’s more likely to occur in people with oily skin, who sweat a lot, have a weak immune system or who live in a hot or humid climate.
The spots that appear with tinea versicolor can be lighter or darker than the surrounding skin. They might be dry, scaly, itchy, or grow together over time.
Skin cleansers, topical medications and anti-fungal pills can all help to treat tinea versicolor.
