Scarlet Fever

Scarlet fever is a complication that sometimes occurs along with strep throat. The primary symptom is a red rash that covers a good portion of the body. It most often occurs in children between ages 5 and 15.

What causes scarlet fever?

The same bacteria that leads to strep throat also causes the outbreaks of scarlet fever. If the bacteria emit a toxin into the body, that’s when scarlet fever can occur. The bacteria can be passed between people via coughing or sneezing.

A red rash all over the body, red lines in folds of skin, a bright red tongue, fever, sore throat, trouble swallowing, swollen glands, nausea, vomiting and headache are all potential symptoms of scarlet fever.

What are scarlet fever care options?

Most cases of scarlet fever can be successfully cured with a course of antibiotics.
