Our Curriculum

Vacation constitutes 1 block per academic year which may be split into two 2-week half-blocks or 1 block (4 weeks total). In addition, there is also a mini-holiday break consisting of 4 days off during either the Christmas or New Year’s holiday.

The two “individualized elective” blocks are selected based on the resident’s personal career goals to further explore a potential fellowship or interest in an area of their choosing. In addition, there are six weeks of “subspecialty elective” blocks, which allow the resident to rotate through the major pediatric subspecialties to further their exposure to these fields. Two of these subspecialty weeks must be an outpatient experience. Combined, these elective rotations constitute 3.5 blocks of their PL1 training year. Each block may be a 4-week rotation or split into two 2-week half-blocks experience to allow for many more opportunities to explore various electives.

During this outpatient 2-week rotation, residents will have the opportunity to work with various community organizations, such as WIC, Lotus House, Special Olympics, and Whispering Manes, to understand the connections between pediatric population health, social determinants of health, health care access, and our local community resources. Additionally, residents will also engage with the NCH Social Work, Case Management, Government Affairs, and Safe Kids Initiative teams, and participate in various ONE NCH community service events.

This is a 1 block rotation in our Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and Emergency Room. Residents will be supervised by PEM fellows and PEM attendings while having exposure to acute care, emergent care, and trauma cases. Residents will also have exposure to common pediatric ER procedures such as suturing, lumbar punctures, wound care, obtaining cultures, and assisting in codes among other skills.

This is a 1 block rotation consisting of 2 weeks in our hospital-based NCH Pediatric Care Center and 2 weeks in our community-based NCH Galloway Pediatric Care Center. Residents will gain experience providing well-child primary care, as well as treating walk-in patients with acute illness, in a general pediatric ambulatory clinic setting. Residents will also participate in community outreach activities such as local school visits, health fairs and screening events. Residents will be supervised by PCC attending physicians.

This is a 1 block rotation in the newborn nursery at Holtz Children’s Hospital/Jackson Memorial Hospital where the intern will work alongside JMH residents to provide well care for newborns, attend deliveries, apply NRP skills, give anticipatory guidance and have exposure to managing common newborn pathology.

Each intern will have 5 blocks of inpatient wards on two distinct inpatient teams. The team consists of 5 interns and is supervised by a PGY-3 Team Leader. Teams are assigned to distinct geographic floors which house both general pediatric admissions, as well as the subspecialties listed below. Teams will round with both the Pediatric Hospitalist and the major subspecialty(ies) of the floor. A resident will rotate through each of the teams at least twice per year. Night shifts are incorporated into each inpatient block providing a longitudinal evening experience.

Inpatient Ward Teams

• 5 Tower Team: General Pediatrics, Neurology, and other subspecialties
• 3 South Team: General Pediatrics, Pulmonology, and other subspecialties

This is an ACGME-required, longitudinal experience in general pediatrics, which occurs throughout the three years of training. Based on a resident’s specific schedule, he/she will have full-day clinic sessions (morning and afternoon) scheduled throughout the academic year, which will provide the resident with year-round outpatient pediatric exposure. Clinic sites include our on-campus Pediatric Care Center (PCC), as well as community-based PCC practices affiliated with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, which are all supervised by board certified general pediatricians.

This is an outpatient, 4-week rotation in which a resident will work alongside our faculty in evaluating and caring for children with special needs, medical complexity, and psychosocial needs. Residents will have exposure to assessing patients with developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, as well as cognitive, speech, psychological and social disorders.  Residents will rotate both on the NCH main campus with our Neurology Department and in the community-based NCH Coral Reef/Palmetto Bay site with our DBP faculty.

This is an outpatient, 2-week rotation in our Adolescent Medicine clinic. During the rotation, residents will have exposure to common gynecological pathology, STI screening and treatment, substance abuse, adolescent anticipatory guidance and psychosocial screening. Residents will be supervised by Adolescent Medicine attending physicians

This is an inpatient, 4-week rotation rotation in our 36-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. During the rotation, residents will have exposure to critically ill pediatric medical and surgical patients (including post-operative, trauma and ECMO patients). Residents will be supervised by our PICU fellows and PICU attending physicians.

This is inpatient, 4-week rotation in our 36-bed, Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. During the rotation, residents will have exposure to premature and critically ill neonates with conditions including, but not limited to, respiratory distress/failure, NEC, sepsis, congenital anomalies, and more. They will also gain experience in neonatal resuscitation, ventilation management, neonatal nutrition and anticipatory care. Residents will be supervised by NICU attending physicians.

Inpatient Subspecialty - Hematology-Oncology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology or Hospital Medicine

This is an inpatient 4-week rotation in which a resident may choose an inpatient subspecialty experience with either the Hematology/Oncology (6T), Cardiology (2T), Gastroenterology (3N), or Hospital Medicine divisions. Residents will be supervised by the respective subspecialty attending physicians.

PL2 residents will have two 2-week Jr. Team Lead rotations, during which they will act as the supervising resident on the 5T B team comprised of inpatient neurology, complex care and general pediatric patients. The block is divided into 1-week of day (6AM-6PM) and 1-week of night (6PM-6AM) Jr. Team Lead experience. The PL2 resident will oversee a team made up of an intern and medical student, lead rounds, see new admissions, and work closely with nursing and clinical staff to ensure the comprehensive care of each patient and their families.

This is a 1 block rotation in our Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and Emergency Room. Residents will be supervised by PEM fellows and PEM attendings while having exposure to acute care, emergent care, and trauma cases. Residents will also have exposure to common pediatric ER procedures such as suturing, lumbar punctures, wound care, obtaining cultures, and assisting in codes among other skills.

This is a 1 block rotation in our hospital-based Pediatric Care Center during which time senior residents will lead the clinic team in providing well-child primary care, as well as walk-in acute illness visits, in a general pediatric ambulatory clinic setting. This rotation provides the PGY-3 resident with increasing autonomy through the supervision of junior residents’ patient care and the opportunity to assist in the operational management of the clinic, including the distribution of patients, review of patient labs and disposition of plans of care. Our PCC attending physicians will oversee the senior residents in this role.

This is a combined inpatient/outpatient, 4-week experience with both our psychiatry and psychology departments, aimed at providing further exposure to the diagnosis and management of various pediatric psychiatric and psychological disorders. The rotation will also include exposure to mental health crisis management in the emergency room setting as well.

This is an outpatient, 4-week rotation in our Adolescent Medicine Department clinic. These are inpatient 2 or 4 week rotations (8 weeks total) spread over the senior year, during which time the PGY-3 will act as the supervising senior resident to one of our two inpatient teams. The senior resident will oversee and lead interns and medical students on the team, see new admissions, structure the rounding schedule, conduct family-centered rounds, and work closely with nursing and clinical staff to ensure the comprehensive care of each patient and their families. The experience will include both day (6AM-6PM) and night (6PM-6AM) shifts.
