A prospective study evaluating serial intestinal ultrasound (IUS) use in pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

The purpose of the research is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and determine if there is inferiority of IUS (serial intestinal ultrasound) in assessing active IBD, presence of abscess or strictures in a unique pediatric population and create awareness about the potential clinical consequences of using IUS routinely for IBD management.  

Inclusion

• 2-20 years old

• U​ndergoing ileocolonoscopy with new onset diagnosis of IBD (Ulcerative colitis (UC or Crohn’s disease (CD)) or ​

• Patients with known IBD who undergo ileocolonoscopy and/or MRE/CTE for follow up of IBD due to complicated disease or need for therapeutic modification.

• History of bowel resection

• Patients with UC with proctitis alone. (Not included in previous studies). ​​

• Comparison group,have undergone an EGD colonoscopy and IUS and the findings of pathology are within normal limits. 

 

Exclusion

• Confirmed diagnosis of infectious gastroenteritis.

• Incomplete ileocolonoscopy.

• BMI more than 30.

• More than 3-week interval period between ileocolonoscopy/MRE/CTE and IUS.
