Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI)

What is a Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI)?

A central line is a special tube placed in a large vein near or inside the heart to help with treatments. Infections from these lines can often be prevented with proper care and handling.

How Can I Help Prevent This Infection for My Child?

  • Talk to the healthcare team. Ask daily if the central line is still needed and how it's being used.

  • Wash hands. Always wash your hands before touching the central line or the area around it.

  • Use CHG wipes. If your child is older than 2 months, help with daily cleaning using special wipes called CHG (chlorhexidine).

  • Check the dressing. Make sure the central line dressing is clean, dry, and tightly sealed.

  • Change bed sheets. Change your child’s bed sheets every day to help prevent infections.
