Michael Duchowny, MD - Pediatric Neurologist

Dr. Duchowny received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He interned in pediatrics at the University of Chicago, and was a resident in pediatrics at Montefiore Hospital, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After serving in the United States Public Health Service as a Commissioned Officer and working as a research associate at the National Institutes of Health, he completed fellowship training in neurology at the Harvard-Longwood Program, where he was also a United Cerebral Palsy fellow. He joined the neurology faculty at Harvard Medical School, first serving as instructor, and then as assistant clinical professor.

After joining the Department of Neurology at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Dr. Duchowny became founding director of the Epilepsy Program and the clinical neurophysiology fellowship.  He also serves as a professor of neurology at the University of Miami Leonard Miller School Of Medicine, and clinical professor at Florida International University College of Medicine.

Dr. Duchowny has made important contributions to the understanding of the role of surgery in the treatment of children with medically refractory epilepsy. Through his scholarly activity and published findings, he has demonstrated that epilepsy surgery is a safe and effective treatment option for properly selected children. As a result, many children are now referred and benefitting from epilepsy surgery who otherwise would not have access to this therapeutic modality. His rigorous study of epilepsy surgery patients in Miami has influenced the thinking of leaders of pediatric epilepsy surgery programs throughout the world and has impacted the care of all children with chronic epilepsy.

Dr. Duchowny is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Neurology and the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology, and is a member of the Child Neurology Society, International Child Neurology Society and American Epilepsy Society. He has served on numerous committees for these societies, and is a past examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is also past president of the Florida Neurology Society, and a longstanding member of the Professional Advisory Boards of the Epilepsy Foundation of South Florida, National Association of Epilepsy Centers and the Boggy Creek Gang. He served as an associate editor of Epilepsia and Epileptic Disorders, and is a contributing editor to numerous professional journals. Dr. Duchowny has served as site reviewer for academic programs and consulted widely for professional organizations.

Dr. Duchowny’s interests include clinical care, teaching and medical research. He lectures widely and has taught medical students, residents and the medical community through hospital rounds, consultation, publications and books.  His research has focused on developmental aspects of epilepsy including brain malformations, mapping brain function and the surgical treatment of chronic epilepsy.  Dr. Duchowny has authored more than 160 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, 50 book chapters and six books and monographs.
