Sleep Eating

Also known as: sleep eating disorder, sleep-related eating disorder.

What is sleep eating?

Sleep eating is an unusual condition where the child will eat and drink uncontrollably while still asleep. The child typically has little to no memory of the event the next morning.

What causes sleep eating?

The exact cause of sleep eating is not known. It appears to be tied to sleepwalking, as those with a history of sleepwalking are most likely to experience sleep eating, as well.

What are the symptoms of sleep eating?

Symptoms of sleep eating can include frequent eating episodes, eating high-fat or high-carb foods, eating unusual or dangerous foods, engaging in potentially dangerous food preparation and having no recollection of the event the following morning.

What are sleep eating care options?

Possible treatments for sleep eating include medications, discontinuing medications that might trigger the events, treating related sleep disorders or employing strategies to keep the individual safe and in bed during these events.

What is a Sleep Study? - What to expect when you stay at the Sleep Lab

In this video, we will explain what to expect during your child's stay at the sleep lab. A sleep study is also called a Polysomnography. This is a test used to diagnose sleep disorders. Polysomnography records your brain waves, the oxygen level in your blood, heart rate and breathing, as well as eye and leg movements during the study.
