This video introduces the risks of Peripheral IV Infiltration (fluid leaking into surrounding tissue) and Extravasation (harmful medication leaking into tissue), which can lead to pain and tissue damage.
Peripheral IV Infiltration and Extravasation (PIVIE)
What is a Peripheral IV Infiltration and Extravasation (PIVIE)?
-
Peripheral IV Infiltration: This happens when the IV (a tube inserted into a vein) is not in the right place, so the fluid starts to leak into the tissue around the vein instead of staying in the vein. This can cause swelling and discomfort.
-
Peripheral IV Extravasation: This is similar to infiltration, but it involves a medicine that can be harmful to the tissue if it leaks out. It can cause more serious damage and pain.
How Can I Help Prevent This From Happening to My Child?
-
Check the IV regularly. Every hour, use the TLC method (Touch, Look, Compare) to check the IV site.
-
Report any issues. If you see any problems, let the unit leader, vascular access team, or the doctor know right away for further assessment and treatment.
