Video Profile

Joseph M. Forbess, MD, MBA
Chief, Cardiovascular Surgery

Dr. Joseph M. Forbess is a pediatric cardiothoracic and congenital cardiac surgeon and serves as chief of the Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists (NCPS) Section of Cardiovascular Surgery with the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Heart Institute. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Forbess completed residencies in general surgery and thoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He then pursued a fellowship in cardiovascular surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts. Dr. Forbess also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from University of Texas at Dallas Naveen Jindal School of Management. His clinical interests include all aspects of congenital heart surgery from birth to adulthood. His particular areas of interest are neonatal cardiac reconstructions and biventricular repairs in infants and young children. He also performs cardiac surgery in the burgeoning population of adults with congenital heart disease.

Dr. Forbess is recognized as one of the leading pediatric and neonatal cardiovascular surgeons in the world. He has received numerous awards for his academic achievements and accomplishments. Dr. Forbess joins Nicklaus Children’s from University of Maryland Medical System, where he was professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and surgical director of the Children’s Heart Program at University of Maryland Children’s Hospital. He was also surgical director of Adult Cardiac Transplantation and director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Training Programs at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Prior to that, Dr. Forbess was the division head of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Dr. Forbess is board certified in congenital cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and American College of Surgeons, a founding member of the World Society for Pediatric Congenital Heart Surgery and a member of the 21st Century Cardiothoracic Surgical Society, American Heart Association’s Council on Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.

Dr. Forbess possesses an extensive background in research focused on surgical techniques and treatments for cardiac disease in neonates and young children. He has published more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals, written chapters for medical textbooks and presented at a multitude of medical conferences.  Dr. Forbess is also involved in device development to address unmet needs in the treatment of pediatric cardiac disease, most recently biodegradable intravascular stents and novel expandable vascular conduits. In addition, Dr. Forbess has a longstanding relationship with Hospital Nacional de Niños in San Jose, Costa Rica, where he has both performed complex surgeries and participated in the successful development of the cardiac team there.

Importantly, Dr. Forbess has deep personal ties to Miami. His maternal grandfather was a stone mason that helped build many of the coral rock municipal features in Coral Gables. His parents grew up here and were graduates of Miami High School. Both of his brothers were born in Miami. Though he grew up in Jacksonville to the north, his extended family was always in Miami. Indeed, when his nephew in Jacksonville had a son that needed newborn heart surgery a few years ago, Dr. Forbess arranged for him to be transported from Jacksonville to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where the Heart Institute team performed a successful arterial switch operation. His nephew’s son is now a typical boy, doing all the things that bring joy to him and his family.

Dr. Forbess is employed by Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists (NCPS), the multispecialty medical group practice of Nicklaus Children’s Health System

The Heart Institute at Nicklaus Children’s, a world leader in pediatric cardiology and cardiovascular surgery for the care of children with congenital heart disease, serves as a beacon to families confronting the reality of a child or newborn with a heart defect. It offers the most innovative and least invasive approaches to the treatment of congenital heart disease, including many first-in-the-world procedures that were pioneered right here by the Heart Institute’s own internationally renowned cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons.
