Also known as: Zika, Zika virus disease.
Zika virus is an illness caused by infected mosquitoes. It occurs mostly in tropical areas but has recently made some appearances in the United States. It often causes no symptoms or mild symptoms but can be dangerous if pregnant women become infected.
A mosquito infected with the Zika virus most often causes the disease. There is some evidence that it can also be spread from person to person through sexual contact or blood transfusions.
Most people have no symptoms to Zika virus. Some get a rash, mild fever, minor aches and pains, headache or red eyes. In pregnant women, Zika virus can cause miscarriage or microcephaly, a dangerous prenatal condition, in the baby.
There is no cure for Zika virus. Over-the-counter medications can help with mild symptoms. The best option is prevention of infection by avoiding areas with the possibility of infection or taking steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
