Devonshire Apartments

Out of town parents and families oftentimes need extended overnight accommodations, Nicklaus Children's also has apartments and efficiencies that can be rented for brief periods of time at very reasonable rates.

Parents play a key role in the treatment process. We try to ensure that they can be near their child during the treatment process. This is just one example of how Nicklaus Children's Hospital cares for families.

All of these services are provided as Nicklaus Children's is firmly committed to providing family-centered care.

Devonshire Apartment Facts

  • Devonshire Apartments offer a comfortable, supportive temporary home for patient families coming from distant places. Sick and healing children require their families’ continual emotional support during the weeks or even months of recovery. The Devonshire Apartments provide a home away from home where family members can sleep, eat, relax and share experiences with other families in similar situations.
  • The Devonshire Apartments are always busy and heavily utilized.
  • Most families who stay at Devonshire are Floridians who live outside of Miami-Dade County. Twenty percent come from outside Florida; many are from Latin America and the Caribbean Islands.
  • The average length of stay is three to five days. Some families, however, may spend up to three months because of their child’s condition. Parents of premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, for example, may need to stay for several months while their baby becomes strong enough to survive in a home environment
  • The Devonshire Apartments consist of two buildings with a total of 20 furnished units, located two blocks from the hospital in a safe residential community.  Units are furnished and include fully equipped kitchens, linens, laundry facilities, private telephone lines/computer jacks, and television.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital would like to thank Ashley HomeStore, IKEA and Knots of Hope for stepping up in a big way to support patients and families during the COVID-19 pandemic by donating new beds, furniture, and other accessories to our Devonshire Apartments.
Ashley HomeStore donated 50 twin-sized bed frames and mattresses, pillows, comforters and sheet sets through its nationwide Hope to Dream initiative. Of those 50 bed sets, 25 were delivered to the Nicklaus Children’s Devonshire Apartments, while the other 25 were individually delivered to underserved families who have been pre-identified by the health system’s social workers.
IKEA added the finishing touches by donating pots and pans, plates, towels, sheets, and some yummy treats to create welcome gift packages that our families will receive at the beginning of their stay with us, while Knots of Hope helped with the beautification of rooms, including bedroom, living room and kitchen upgrades.
