 Dr. Alejandro Martinez Herrada is a pediatric cardiac intensivist with the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Heart Institute. He earned his medical degree from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru. Dr. Martinez Herrada completed his residency in pediatrics at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital where he was awarded both the Arturo Aballi MD Educational Award and the Agustin Castellanos MD Award for resident of the year of his graduating class. He then pursued fellowship training in pediatric critical care medicine at UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital - Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was honored with the Fellowship Research Award Program in Pediatrics. During his pediatric critical care medicine fellowship, he received additional training at the University of Pittsburgh UPMC Children’s Hospital and Akron Children’s Hospital. Dr. Martinez Herrada completed an advanced fellowship in pediatric cardiac intensive care medicine at Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C. His clinical interests include extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ventricular assist device use in complex congenital heart disease, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and virtual reality-based simulation use in medical education.
 
Dr. Martinez Herrada is board certified in general pediatrics. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and member of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators and American Medical Association. Dr. Martinez Herrada has published his work and served as a reviewer for peer-reviewed medical journals. He has presented his research work at multiple national and international medical meetings.
 
Dr. Martinez Herrada is employed by Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists (NCPS), the physician-led multispecialty group practice of Nicklaus Children’s Health System. He is bilingual in English and Spanish.
