Nicklaus Children's Hospital Now Offering EOS Imaging Services in Broward County

Published on: 04/03/2017
Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is now offering the EOS Imaging System, a low radiation device that produces 3D, full-body images, in Broward County. EOS is used for the evaluation of patients with spine, hip and leg disorders. The system is located at the Nicklaus Children’s Miramar Outpatient Center and is the only pediatric facility in Broward County currently offering the EOS Imaging System. Nicklaus Children’s Orthopedic Surgery Department has utilized EOS Imaging technology at the main hospital campus since 2013.

The EOS imaging system is used for imaging in the evaluation of pediatric orthopedic patients and is the only 3D system capable of scanning patients in a weight-bearing standing or sitting position to capture natural posture and joint orientation.  EOS imaging is particularly advantageous to children with progressive conditions such as scoliosis and other spinal deformities that require frequent imaging to monitor disease progression. The technology enables specialists to obtain high-quality images of the patient’s spine with a radiation dose up to nine times less than a computed radiography X-ray and up to 20 times less than a CT scan.  The device also reduces the amount of time it takes to conduct a radiological scan.

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital specializes in the care and management of musculo-skeletal conditions in children and is the most comprehensive pediatric orthopedic practice in Florida. The team is made up of 11 board-certified orthopedic surgeons that perform more than 1,400 surgical procedures each year and 34,000 outpatient visits annually. Orthopedics was one of six initial departments established when the hospital was founded in 1950.
