Renal MAG3 scan is an imaging test that examines the shape, size, position and function of the kidneys. It’s a nuclear medicine test that involves using a radioactive material in order to add clarity to the images related to the test.
The patient lies down on a table, and an IV is used to injected a special radioactive liquid into the veins. A catheter is also used to keep the bladder empty of urine during the test. Then a special camera is used to take images of the kidneys and surrounding area.
No special preparation is needed for the test.
Urinary tract infection or damage to the urethra or bladder are potential risks of the catheter. The risks of radiation exposure are mild.
