Dr. Hannan graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and received his medical degree from the University of California at San Francisco. He trained in General Surgery at Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Cardiac Surgery at Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women’s’ Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. He was then an Associate Professor of Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He joined Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in 1998.


Dr. Hannan worked in the research laboratory of Dr. Judah Folkman, a world-renowned angiogenesis researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Whitehead Institute at MIT. Dr. Hannan has multiple patents, including his discoveries on the heparin molecule. He is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Hannan is the author of many basic science and clinical research publications. Dr. Hannan’s current research interests center around new methods of mechanically supporting children with failing hearts and clinical outcomes in congenital heart surgery.
