What is the lactate: Pyruvate Ratio (CSF)?
Also known as: lactate and pyruvate CSF test, cerebrospinal fluid test.
A lactate: pyruvate (CSF) test is helpful in evaluating for several disorders related to mitochondrial metabolism that may be present at birth. These disorders tend to cause problems such as neurological dysfunction and/or myopathic dysfunction. Specifically, the test measures the ratio of lactate to pyruvate in the body’s cerebrospinal fluid.
What happens during the procedure?
A sample of cerebrospinal fluid is required in order to begin the lactate and pyruvate cerebrospinal fluid test. Typically, the patient lies on his or her side, while a numbing medicine maybe is administered to the injection site. Then the sample is drawn from around the spine with a needle and a syringe. The sample is then taken to a laboratory for testing and analysis. A high lactate to pyruvate ratio may be indicative of a problem.
Is any special preparation needed?
There is no special preparation needed.
What are the risk factors?
Infection, bleeding and damage to surrounding organs and tissues are potential risks of any test requiring needle insertion. Individuals may also experience headaches and dizziness after test.
