Flu Vaccine

Children with diabetes are more likely to experience complications from the flu that can lead to hospitalization.

  • All children 6 months of age and older with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes should receive the flu vaccine.
  • In addition, everyone in the household should also be vaccinated.
  • Children between the ages of 6 months to 8 years need two vaccines at least a month apart if they:
    • Are receiving the flu shot for the first time, or
    • Did not get two shots during one flu season before July 1, 2019

Pneumococcal Vaccine

Children with diabetes need extra protection against pneumonia and meningitis.

  • All children receive routine vaccination with PCV-13 at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months and between 12- 15 months of age. This vaccine can protect against pneumonia and pneumococcal meningitis.
  • After age 2, children with Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2 will need:
    • One dose of PCV-23, the 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine
    • This should be given at least eight weeks after the last dose of PCV-13

All routine vaccinations are recommended and should follow CDC Guidelines.
