In honor of Valentine’s Day and Congenital Heart Defect Awareness week, I-Flow Corporation, makers of ON-Q PainBuster, and Artsonia, the largest online kids’ art museum, have committed to donating 30 percent of the proceeds from the sale of these items from now until the end of February to Miami Children's Hospital Foundation to support the Congenital Heart Institute and The Children's Heart Foundation for congenital heart defect research.
Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defects among babies born in the United States and occur in approximately one out of every 100 newborns. Congenital heart disease is a leading cause of birth defect-related deaths world-wide. “This year almost 41,000 babies [in the United States] will be born with a heart defect, and 4,000 of them will not live to see their first birthday. In the past decade, death rates for congenital heart defects have declined by 30 percent because of the advances made through research,” said William Foley, Executive Director of The Children’s Heart Foundation. Despite the fact that congenital heart defects affect millions of families, a relatively small amount of funding is currently available for research and parent/patient educational services. Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week (February 7-14) is an annual campaign intended to increase public awareness of Congenital Heart Defects and Childhood Heart Disease resulting in additional support and educational services, scientific research and better care for children and adults.
Young patients that were helped by the cardiovascular surgeons at Miami Children's Hospital’s Congenital Heart Institute volunteered their time in order to create the artwork that will help raise funds for both Miami Children's Hospital Foundation and The Children’s Heart Foundation. Through research and assistance, these two non-profit organizations specialize in building brighter futures for children born with congenital heart defects.
