Miami Children’s Hospital Acquires Electronic Medical Record System

Published on: 09/13/2010
Miami, FL (September 13, 2010) – Miami Children's Hospital (MCH) has announced that it has signed a contract with Cerner, a leading global supplier of healthcare solutions, healthcare devices and related services, to acquire an electronic medical record system.

MCH will implement multiple Cerner solutions to automate processes in the emergency department, laboratory, surgery, radiology and pharmacy. The electronic medical record (EMR) system also includes house-wide Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS). The second phase of implementation is expected to automate the revenue cycle with Cerner’s revenue cycle offerings. This new automated solution will enable clinicians to have instant access to proven best practices and evidence-based decision support.

With the acquisition of the Cerner system, which is internally named PEDS or Pediatric Electronic Data System, the hospital begins an 18-month transition towards a paperless chart system for patients. PEDS will streamline the registration process, optimize compliance and improve efficiency, which will in turn allow healthcare workers to enhance the delivery of care for the children they serve.

MCH will begin integrating the many separate systems now in place with a cutting edge EMR framework. Once completed, authorized physicians, nurses, pharmacists, lab technicians and business office personnel can all access one patient record at the same time, regardless of where they are located with a handheld electronic device. With PEDS, information is available whenever and wherever it’s needed.

“The benefits of the EMR system to patients and care staff are immense. With radiology, laboratory, inpatient care, outpatient care, rehabilitation services, urgent care, and patient billing all under one umbrella system, MCH will increase efficiency in managing the needs of our young patients,” said M. Narendra Kini, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Miami Children’s Hospital. “Families will no longer have to register separately for each service, and caregivers will have ready access to the entire panorama of data associated with a patient’s care within our system.”
