Published on: 08/12/2014
MIAMI — Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) has been recognized as a Center of Excellence for its extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). The award recognizes excellence and patient satisfaction in ECMO, a heart-lung bypass therapy that allows a critically ill child or infant’s heart and lungs to rest while healing takes place.

MCH was selected as a Center of Excellence for demonstrating extraordinary achievement in the following three categories:
  • Excellence in promoting the mission, activities, and vision of ELSO;
  • Excellence in patient care by using the highest quality measures, processes, and structures based upon evidence; and
  • Excellence in training, education, collaboration, and communication supporting ELSO guidelines that contributes to a healing environment for families, patients and staff.

“Congratulations to the entire Miami Children’s ECMO team for their dedication in providing exceptional care and support for critically ill children. This recognition is a testament to our continued mission to provide the best care possible for the patients and families we serve,” said Dr. Keith Meyer, Medical Director of the Extra Corporeal Life Support and Apheresis Services at MCH.

I wish to extend sincere appreciation to the ECMO team for their unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care. It is because of their great work that we have achieved this distinction for the fourth time since the ELSO award’s inception in 2008, said Dr. Deise Granado-Villar, Senior Vice President of Medical and Academic Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at MCH.

The ELSO Award signifies to patients and families a commitment to exceptional patient care. It also demonstrates an assurance of high quality standards, specialized equipment and supplies, defined patient protocols, and advanced education of all staff members.
