Miami Children's Hospital Physician Honored by Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

William I. Muiños, MD, attending pediatric gastroenterologist at Miami Children’s Hospital, was the recipient of the 2006 Publix Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) Ambassador Award for his leadership on behalf of the CFF. 

Dr. Muiños is the founder the Miami Kayak Challenge, which raises more than $30,000 annually for cystic fibrosis research. Dr. Muiños also speaks on behalf of the foundation at area schools, businesses and events. 

“Since 1988, the Miami Kayak Challenge has raised funds and hope for patients afflicted with cystic fibrosis, offering hope that someday they will take an effortless breath without the need antibiotics or medical treatments,” said Dr. Muiños. 

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. A defective gene causes the body to produce abnormally sticky mucus, which leads to chronic and life-threatening lung infections and impairs digestion. Currently there is no cure. 

Founded in 1950, Miami Children's Hospital is the only licensed specialty hospital for children in South Florida.
